Reza Pahlavi Visits Sweden—To Speak In Parliament

Reza Pahlavi is coming to Sweden, reports Svenska Dagbladet. He is the son of the last Shah of Iran and has been invited to speak in Parliament by the Christian Democrats' and Sweden Democrats' parliamentary groups.

"It feels really good. He is the person who can unite the opposition in Iran," Magnus Berntsson, foreign policy spokesperson for the Christian Democrats, told SvD.

Pahlavi's visit to the Riksdag is scheduled for Monday, April 13.

"We have a very large Iranian diaspora in Sweden that wants to see democratic rule. That is why it is important that there is contact between us and the democratic forces in the country," Berntsson told SvD.

Living In Exile

Reza Pahlavi is the eldest son of Iran's deposed shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The shah was overthrown in 1979 after ruling the country with an iron fist, and Pahlavi has lived in exile ever since.

Pahlavi currently lives in the United States and has for decades been part of the Iranian opposition—advocating for nonviolent resistance and secular democracy.

Relative Of High–Ranking Police Chief Arrested In Drug Ring

Two individuals with family ties to a high-ranking police chief have been arrested as part of the international operation "Candy."

One of them was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon on probable cause, suspected of aggravated money laundering, but denies the charges.

Due to these connections, the police chief has been reassigned within the agency.

The international police operation "Candy" targets large-scale drug crimes and money laundering. Several business owners have been in custody since the beginning of the month, suspected of, among other things, helping criminal networks launder money.

Man With Ties To Police Chief Previously Arrested

SVT has previously reported that a high-ranking police chief has ties to one of the main suspects through family members. The suspect in question is accused of, among other things, a particularly serious drug offense, a serious money laundering offense, and several accounting offenses.

According to information provided to SVT, the police chief has been reassigned due to this.

The Police Authority has written to SVT stating that it does not comment on the reasons why the authority assigns various assignments or duties to individual employees.

SVT has contacted the police chief, who has declined the interview request.

Two Relatives Of the Police Chief Arrested

On Thursday, two more relatives of the CEO were ordered detained as part of Operation "Candy." One is the CEO of a corporate group and was detained on Thursday afternoon on probable cause-the higher standard of suspicion-for aggravated money laundering. The suspect denies the charges.

The other is suspected of aggravated money laundering, a crime that, according to the arrest warrant, has been ongoing for nearly nine years.

The Swedish People: It Was Wrong To Attack Iran

It was wrong of the U.S. and Israel to attack Iran. That is the view of a majority of the Swedish people, according to a poll conducted by Indikator Opinion on behalf of SVT.

Opinions are divided, however. 1,463 people responded to the survey, which was conducted March 5–16.

Only 32 percent stated that they fully or partially agree with the statement "It was right for the U.S. and Israel to attack Iran." 59 percent responded that they "barely agree or do not agree at all."

Women and young people are the most critical.

Explosion At Jewish School In Amsterdam

An explosion occurred at a Jewish school in Amsterdam early Saturday morning, reports the newspaper Telegraaf.

Damage to the school is limited, according to Mayor Femke Halsema. No one is reported to have been injured.

The incident is viewed by Halsema, the police, and the judicial authorities as a targeted attack against the Jewish community, writes the Telegraaf.

"Amsterdam should be a place where Jews can live in safety," Halsema told the newspaper.

The police are analyzing footage from surveillance cameras, which show a person detonating an explosive device, according to the Telegraaf.

On Friday, four men were arrested following an explosion outside a synagogue in Rotterdam, according to the AFP news agency. A synagogue in Liège, Belgium, was also attacked earlier this week.

Linda Staaf Forced To Leave Top Job—Relative Suspected Of Crime

Last week, 13 people were arrested in operations "Candy" and "Pandora."
One of the suspects is reported to be a relative of police chief Linda Staaf.
This is said to be the reason why she had to leave her job as head of Europol in Sweden last year, according to Expressen.

Last week, police carried out a coordinated operation in Sweden, Thailand, Spain, and other countries. In the two operations, "Candy" and "Pandora." led by Swedish police, 13 people were arrested.

The suspects are accused of online drug sales and extensive money laundering.

According to information provided to Expressen, one of the suspects has family ties to Linda Staaf, Chief Superintendent of the National Operations Department (NOA). According to the newspaper, the man was remanded in custody on Wednesday in absentia for particularly serious drug offenses, serious money laundering offenses, and a series of serious accounting offenses.

He denies any wrongdoing.

Left In 2025

The crime has been under investigation since 2024. In 2025, Linda Staaf had to leave her job as head of Europol in Sweden, and according to Expressen, the reason for this was her connection to the suspect.

SVT Nyheter has also previously reported that one of the suspects has links to a high–ranking police chief, without mentioning any names.

In an email to Expressen, the Police Authority writes that they will not comment on the information or the background to Linda Staaf's change of position.

Linda Staaf herself has also declined to comment on the information.

"There is nothing I want to comment on there," Linda Staaf told Expressen.

Explosion At the US Embassy In Oslo—No Arrests

On Saturday night, an explosion occurred at the US Embassy in Oslo.

"We must take into account that the situation in the Middle East may be a cause," Police Chief Grete Metlid told NRK.

The US Embassy in Stockholm is now urging Americans to exercise caution.

There are no reports of injuries, but the entrance to the US Embassy has sustained minor damage.

The explosion at around 1 a.m. was probably caused by some type of explosive device, Frode Larsen, head of the Oslo Police Investigation and Intelligence Unit, told NRK after a press conference on Sunday afternoon.

"We have found a lot of material there that we are now going to analyze," Larsen told the channel.

The police are searching for one or more perpetrators and have used drones, dog patrols, and a helicopter in the hunt. As of Sunday afternoon, no suspects had been arrested.

Police: Terrorism One Of the Hypotheses

According to the police, this was a targeted attack against the embassy. One of the hypotheses is that it was terrorism, Larsen said, according to NRK.

"But we are not completely locked into that. We must be open to the possibility that there may be other reasons for what happened," Larsen said.

The police are working closely with Norway's security service, PST, and security around the embassy has been reinforced following the explosion.

"Over time, and especially recently, we have had an increased presence at several locations in the capital, based on the security situation. After last night's incident, we have further strengthened our measures," Grete Metlid, head of the joint operational services unit at the police, told NRK.

Calls On Citizens To Exercise Caution

She says they are investigating whether the situation in Iran and the war with the US could be a cause.

"But we don't know that, we must also consider other explanations."

Following the attack on the US embassy in Oslo on Sunday, the US embassy in Sweden is now issuing a warning to American citizens in the country.

Following the incident, the US embassy in Stockholm is urging American citizens on its website to "be extra vigilant about their surroundings" and to take care of their personal safety.

USA: Weak Support For Trump's Warfare

An increasing number of opinion polls show weak support for Trump's war policy, and Americans are concerned about increased polarisation.

"We are more divided than ever, and it was pretty bad before," says Don, who has served in the US military for over 40 years.

In the US, Congress has voted down attempts to limit Donald Trump's power over US military operations in the Middle East. At the same time, an Ipsos opinion poll commissioned by Reuters shows that only one in four Americans supports the war against Iran.

A Fox News poll shows that 51 percent of Americans believe the president's handling of Iran has made the US less secure.

Now people in the US are concerned that the war could widen the divisions in society.

"We are more divided than ever, and it was pretty bad even before," says Don, who has served in the US military for over 40 years.

He tells SVT that he believes this could become yet another polarizing issue.

Stacey Palmer, on the other hand, who is visiting Virginia where SVT meets her, is cautiously optimistic and hopes for real change for the people of Iran. But she emphasizes that it must not develop into another protracted war for American troops.

"I don't want to see a ground invasion, I'm terrified of that. Nor do I want to see it turn into Afghanistan, with us staying there for years," she says.

At the age of 20, Ebba was recruited in Kungsträdgården by a model scout who predicted a brilliant career for her in France. There she encountered the darkest side of the industry. Now she hopes that the French authorities will get to the bottom of the allegations of abuse that have followed the release of the Epstein files.

"My hope is that we can clean up so that this doesn't have to happen anymore," says Ebba P Karlsson.

In the summer of 1990, Ebba P Karlsson was stopped by a man in Kungsträdgården in Stockholm. He was a model scout and promised her a job.

"He gave me his business card, was very professional, and told me a lot about what he had done before. It was easy to think that he was a special model scout who was from France and had come here to look for new models. I felt very special," she says.

Ebba P Karlsson worked as a shop assistant, but decided to pursue a career as a model in France. The meeting changed her life. Instead of professional modeling jobs, she was met with an environment of threats, insults, and sexual abuse.

"It was shocking," she says.

Did Not Know His Identity

Ebba P Karlsson managed to break free and returned to Sweden. But her experiences of the dark side of the fashion industry have followed her throughout her life. She now lives in the US, has written a book about her experiences, and is committed to helping other women who have been victimized.

But it was only after the major release of the Epstein files that Ebba P Karlsson found out the model scout's true identity. The man is a Swedish citizen, appears thousands of times in the files, and for years recruited girls for sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his close friend, model agent Jean-Luc Brunel. Both died while in custody. They were suspected of trafficking and several sex crimes, among other things.

French Authorities Reopen Investigation

French prosecutors are now investigating their network and any crimes linked to France. Ebba P Karlsson is ready to cooperate with the investigation and hopes that more women will come forward.

SVT has contacted the model scout, who denies any wrongdoing. He says he has nothing to hide and is willing to be interviewed in Paris. But when SVT arrives, the man does not show up.

SKR Wants To Stop Skilled Workers Being Deported

According to Sweden's municipalities and regions, there are tens of thousands of healthcare workers who were born abroad and have not lived here for more than ten years. The organization now wants to see an end to "skilled worker deportations."

"We would not be able to do our job without these employees," says Anders Henriksson, chairman of SKR.

Previously, people whose asylum applications had been rejected could apply for work permits and thus remain in Sweden, a process known as "track change." However, the law was changed on April 1 last year, and since then, 650 people have been issued with deportation orders.

"Today, we have approximately 4,000 doctors, 2,000 nurses, and 33,000 nursing assistants who were born abroad and have come to Sweden in the last ten years," says Anders Henriksson.

Two of them are Zahra Kazemipour and Afshad Joubeh. Both work in healthcare and have lived in Sweden for 10 years. They had previously been granted work permits, which were revoked last fall, leading to high–profile protests at Södra Sjukhuset, where Zahra Kazemipour works.

"Politicians said this would target criminals, but they have started targeting people like us, who have bought houses and pay taxes," says Zahra Kazemipour.

National Audit Office: Has Been Abused

The organization Sweden's Municipalities and Regions now wants to see an end to what they call "skills deportations."

"Putting forward proposals that make it more difficult for us to meet our skills needs is completely the wrong way to go. That is why we and the trade unions have reacted so strongly," he says.

The Swedish National Audit Office has previously pointed out that the old legislation on changing tracks has sometimes been abused. Migration Minister Johan Forsell (M) has previously said that this is a complex issue.

"This group, like everyone else, can apply for a new work permit. It takes an average of 19 days to obtain a new work permit," he told SVT in December.

But in order to apply for a new work permit, the family must first return to Iran, which is difficult due to the security situation. At present, all deportations to Iran have been temporarily suspended.

Principles

And the Green Grass Of Home

January 19

Grönland visar på behovet av en europeisk strategi.

[machine translation]

Greenland Highlights the Need For a European Strategy

Europe has the principles on its side. We should use this to influence public opinion in the US. But more importantly, we need to develop a strategy to emerge stronger from this situation.

Donald Trump's desire to take over Greenland has provoked strong reactions in Europe. This is understandable. What is at stake is not only Greenland, but also the internal cohesion of the Western world, Europe's credibility, and the long–term relationship between the EU and the US.

Greenland has rarely been at the center of world politics. Few Swedes would have even thought about the island's connection to Denmark before Donald Trump put the Arctic island in the global spotlight. There is therefore good reason to understand the background.

Greenland is half the size of the EU, but mostly covered by ice and has just over 50,000 inhabitants. The island, which is geographically located in North America, became a Danish colony in 1814 and remained a colony until 1953. It is not part of the Danish nation state but an autonomous territory within the Danish "commonwealth" or kingdom. This is reminiscent of certain French and British overseas territories that still exist today.

Greenland's autonomy is quite extensive and was initially granted even before it ceased to be a colony, and was then expanded in 1979 and 2008. For example, Greenlanders do not have to do military service in the Danish army and manage their own internal affairs, while Denmark and NATO are responsible for military defense. The US has a military base on the island. Greenland chose to leave the EU in 1985. However, Greenlanders are Danish citizens.

Denmark has granted Greenland a legal option to become independent. There is also strong support for independence among the island's political parties. Relations with Denmark have historically been anything but smooth. Among other things, Denmark ran a campaign on the island from the 1960s to the 1990s to reduce the birth rate for social reasons, a campaign that has been accused of resembling a forced sterilization campaign.

But the fact is that Greenland would find it very difficult to manage on its own. The economy is too small and social problems have been widespread, with contributions from the Danish state accounting for a significant part of its income. The few inhabitants of the island would, of course, also be unable to defend Greenland militarily.

It is somewhat paradoxical. Greenland actually has a more autonomous position in relation to Europe than the French territory of New Caledonia in the Pacific, which has a much larger population, fewer special rights, and is part of the EU.

The fundamental question of Greenland's status is therefore not primarily about Greenland's autonomy—which is strong on paper but weak in reality—but about the principle of not allowing a superpower to threaten its territory. If European countries allow Donald Trump to have his way without any resistance, they will be showing that they are allowing themselves to be blackmailed, which will open the door to new demands from the Trump administration for European submission. Another strong reason—related to the first—is that Europe should offer resistance in order to counteract the authoritarian developments in the US itself. Support for taking Greenland by force is weak in Congress and among the American people, but if Trump were to succeed in taking control of the island without it costing him anything, it would strengthen his prestige and further increase the concentration of power around him as a person. Resistance is relevant precisely because Trump does not have total political power in the US. It is not in Europe's interest for the US to develop into something resembling a dictatorship.

So why is Greenland so important to the Trump administration? Personal prestige appears to be a key motive behind Donald Trump's desire to take over Greenland. He simply wants to go down in history as the president who expanded US territory for the first time in modern times.

The rational arguments for the US needing to own the island are weak. The US already has full military access to the island through agreements. It would be easy to expand its military presence or build missile defense facilities—thanks to its location, the island is strategically important for missile defense. But in reality, the US has been reducing its military presence in Greenland for many years.

So is there any truth in the claim that the US needs to own the island to secure its planned military investments? No, formal ownership is just one form of power among many. Thanks to its military strength, the US already has all the relevant power over the island from a security policy perspective. One could say that the US "owns" the island in practice, in those respects that are relevant to the US. There is therefore no real risk that Denmark or the Greenlanders themselves would in the future attempt or even be able to obstruct US military control over the island. Similarly, the US can already prevent Chinese interests from establishing themselves on the island. Nor are there any obstacles to extracting minerals.

What sets Donald Trump apart, however, is that he is not content with de facto control; he wants to make it clear to the world that he is the one in charge. He wants to be able to raise the American flag in Greenland during his term of office, not in a hypothetical future scenario where the US position in Greenland would be threatened.

However, the fact that Donald Trump is partly driven by narcissistic tendencies is no consolation for Europe. Nor is the fact that international law clearly speaks out against Trump, except indirectly. Europe can and should use its principled advantage in this matter to strengthen the forces in the US that can oppose Trump. However, both European politicians and the general public should understand that the value of standing up for principles is about influencing public opinion and defending Europe's interests. The so-called rules—based world order is not a gift from God or a supernatural force. Until now, it has rested on American military power. With Trump in the White House, one may wonder whether it even exists anymore as anything more than an idea.

Europe must therefore act wisely. The EU countries find themselves in a difficult situation. We have an aggressive Russia to the east that has invaded its neighbor Ukraine. We are militarily and technologically heavily dependent on the US. One could say that Europe has been naive in "leasing out" its defense and IT technology. But such hindsight is of little help. However, it is time to let go of the naivety. Twice, the American people have elected Donald Trump as president. There is no guarantee that they will not elect someone with the same agenda as him in the next election. A return to "normality" should not be expected, as "normality" does not exist in history. Trump is a symptom of the fact that the US, like the world at large, is changing for a variety of underlying structural reasons. Of course, the US may have a more reasonable leader in the future—but Europe's military defense cannot be left to chance.

European countries must therefore accelerate the process of freeing themselves from their dependence on the US. But this will take time. Perhaps up to ten years, even if we make every effort. Today, only the US has certain military capabilities for coordination, satellite surveillance, and transport.

European leaders will therefore inevitably face a difficult balancing act in the coming years. As I said, we should take a stand against the US. We cannot defend Greenland militarily if the US wants to occupy the island, but we can raise the political price of doing so. Sending unarmed officers there is therefore not as foolish as it may seem.

At the same time, we should not downplay what is at stake. The war in Ukraine is still ongoing. A total break between the US and Europe in this situation would be very unfortunate, to say the least.

Admittedly, it is Europe that is currently supplying Ukraine with weapons and, to an increasing extent, intelligence information. However, Ukraine uses American weapons systems, and Europe buys weapons from the US that are then channelled to Ukraine. We must assume that Russia would exploit the situation in the event of a rift between the EU and the US, and perhaps also in other places. It is not certain that they would do so. After all, Russia's capacity is limited, and Moscow may also want to maintain a minimum level of relations with EU countries. But this is just as much wishful thinking as hoping for a kinder US president.

We are currently the weaker party, despite our great potential to become stronger. Morality is the weapon of the weak. It has value. But it is important not to get stuck in the mindset that it is enough to say that it is "Trump's fault" and believe that morality can replace strategy. Europe has power over its own actions. The EU can only influence the US indirectly by trying to sway public opinion in the country and possibly using its economic power in a measured way.

NATO has not yet been dissolved, and there is absolutely no reason for Europe to rush that process. At the same time, this does not mean that we should bow down to Trumpr's demands, as this is not in our long–term interest either. This is why political wisdom and perspective are needed, rather than slogans about giving up or going to war with the Americans. Now is not the time for simplifications.

Kristersson (M): The US Should Thank Denmark

The US military attack on Venezuela violates international law and risks encouraging other countries to act in the same way. This is according to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) in his speech at Folk och Försvar (People and Defense), in which he criticizes the US's "threatening rhetoric" towards Denmark and Greenland.

"On the contrary, the US should thank Denmark, which has been a very loyal ally over the years," said the prime minister, adding that Sweden will stand up for its neighbor.

The SSU has opened up the possibility of sending Swedish soldiers to Greenland. Social Democratic Party leader Magdalena Andersson supports the youth league's proposal.

"I am not opposed to an increased military presence in Greenland. This obviously also applies to Swedish soldiers," she told Dagens ETC ahead of her participation in Folk och Försvar (People and Defense).

The S leader believes it is important for Sweden and other European countries to stand behind Greenland and Denmark following the latest moves by the US and President Donald Trump.

Opinion: More Weapons To Ukraine

There continues to be strong support among Swedes for sending more weapons to war–torn Ukraine, according to an opinion poll by Indikator for Sveriges Radio Ekot.

In the survey, over 2,700 Swedes were interviewed, with 55 percent in favor of continued arms deliveries and 15 percent against. Support is strongest among Swedes over the age of 50.

There are no apparent differences linked to party affiliations. Twenty–five percent believe that it is a fairly good or very good proposal for Ukraine to give up land for peace, while 48 percent believe the opposite.

Suspected Spy Arrested—Denies Crime

The man, who is in his 30s, started a computer company and has been employed by the Swedish Armed Forces. He has now been arrested on probable cause on suspicion of espionage.

"This is a very sensitive investigation and, against that background, I cannot comment further at this stage," says senior prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist.

The man, who is in his 30s, is registered as living in central Sweden. He started a computer consulting company in 2024, which, according to the company's own description, would work with cyber security, including through "offensive cyber operations." In 2024, the company had no turnover.

On Wednesday, he was remanded in custody on probable cause suspected of espionage. He denies the charges.

"In general, it's never fun to be deprived of your liberty. Otherwise, I have no comment," says the man's lawyer, Hanna Lindblom.

Worked For the Swedish Armed Forces

The crime for which the man is being detained is alleged to have taken place in Stockholm County between January 1, 2025, and January 4, 2026, when he was arrested and detained.

"The district court has remanded the suspect in custody in accordance with my request," said senior prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist in a press release.

The Public Prosecutor's Office has previously stated that the allegations relate to crimes committed since 2022.

The man has previously started several university programs related to IT security, but has not completed any of them. He has also been employed by the Swedish Armed Forces. The authority states that he has been employed as a consultant through an IT consulting company during the years 2018–2022.

Documents show that the man has accused authorities of surveillance and alleged criminal activity.

"The Government Has Been Informed"

According to Säpo, the investigation has been ongoing for some time.

"The government has been informed and is in contact with the Security Police. Regarding this matter, we must refer to the Security Police and the Public Prosecutor's Office," says Caroline Opsahl, press secretary to Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M).

The prosecutors have not wanted to say which entity he is suspected of spying for.

"We cannot disclose which country or countries, or which intelligence or security services, he is alleged to have worked for," prosecutor Per Lindqvist told TT on Monday.

Hovets svar om prinsessan Sofias kontakt med Jeffrey Epstein.

The Royal Court's Response Regarding Princess Sofia's Contact With Jeffrey Epstein

Princess Sofia met financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein several times when she was in her 20s, according to an investigation conducted by DN last week. The Royal Court has now issued a statement.

In an email to Expressen, the Royal Court writes:

"No one can be expected to remember every person they have met in their life, but what Princess Sofia remembers is that she met Epstein a few times about 20 years ago. We would like to clarify that this took place in social contexts, such as at a restaurant and a film premiere."

The Royal Court further states that the information that Princess Sofia received help from Epstein with acting training or a visa to the US is incorrect.

"The princess has therefore never been in any kind of dependent relationship with him, nor has she had any contact with him for 20 years."

This Is What Happened

In November, over 20,000 previously classified documents from the Epstein investigation were released.

Several Swedish media outlets reported that Swedish businesswoman Barbro Ehnbom mentioned Princess Sofia in an email to Epstein, in which she listed several women connected to her women's network Barbro's Best and Brightest (BBB).

DN has seen emails from a new leak. It contains emails sent to another of Epstein's email addresses.

In an email to Epstein, Barbro Ehnbom describes Princess Sofia as an "aspiring actress" who had just moved to New York and asked if he wanted to meet her.

Princess Sofia is now married to Prince Carl Philip, but in the 2000s she was "a familiar face on Stockholm's nightlife scene," as DN describes it. Among other things, she appeared on Paradise Hotel in 2005 before moving to New York, where she blogged about exclusive celebrity parties.

The Swedish royal court confirmed to DN that Princess Sofia was "introduced" to Jeffrey Epstein on a number of occasions around 2005.

"I'm in the Caribbean. Does she want to come for a few days? I'll send a ticket," Jeffrey Epstein replied, according to DN.

The Swedish Free People's Movement, et al., have been very vocal about Barbro Ehnbom's doings.

Lundsberg Students Convicted Of Assault

Four male students at Lundsberg boarding school in Värmland have been sentenced to community service for assaulting some younger classmates.

According to the district court, the four high school students jointly planned the crimes, which consisted of breaking into the bedrooms of some ninth graders at night and beating them with a belt.

The assault was allegedly in retaliation for the younger students mocking them during a so–called rap battle.

The defense has claimed that the beating was part of the prevailing culture at the school, but the district court disagrees.

Enkät: Nära hälften ser Trump som en fiende till Europa.

Survey: Nearly Half See Trump As an Enemy Of Europe

48 percent. That is the proportion of Europeans who see US President Donald Trump as an enemy of Europe, according to a survey conducted in nine countries. At the same time, a slight majority believe that the risk of war with Russia is high, but that confidence in their own military's defense capabilities is relatively low.

The survey, conducted by the polling company Cluster17 on behalf of the French debate platform Le Grand Continent, asked 9,955 respondents across nine European countries a series of questions related to the EU, Brexit, and whether they were enthusiastic or concerned about technological innovations related to AI and space research.

But the poll also asked about Europeans' attitudes toward Trump, more specifically whether they see him as a friend or foe of Europe.

Of those surveyed, 48 percent believed that Trump is a direct enemy of Europe. Belgians were the most negative toward Trump, with 62 percent viewing him as an enemy, while Polish residents were the least negative, at 19 percent.

"Looking across the continent, it is clear that Trump is seen as a hostile force," Cluster17 founder Jean–Yves Dormagen told The Guardian, which also reported on the survey.

High Concern About War

Despite this, Europeans believe that relations with the US remain strategically important, according to the survey. For this reason, an equal number—48 percent—saw a willingness to compromise as the best approach for European leaders in negotiations with Trump.

The survey was conducted through questionnaires in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Croatia, and also looked at Europeans' concerns about war with Russia.

Here, a narrow majority, 51 percent, agreed that the risk of open war with Russia in the coming years was high. 18 percent of respondents even went so far as to call the risk very high, but concern varied greatly depending on the respondents' geographical proximity to Russia.

For example, 77 percent of respondents in Poland considered the risk to be high, but in Portugal and Italy the figures were 39 and 34 percent, respectively. In connection with this question, pollsters also asked how much Europeans trusted their own armed forces—and the answer was grim.

Confidence In the Military Was Low

Over two–thirds believed that their own country's ability to defend itself against Russian aggression was either low or very low. The French had the highest confidence in their armed forces, but even there it was only a minority of 44 percent.

"The overall picture in the survey shows that Europe is anxious, deeply aware of its vulnerabilities, and finds it difficult to imagine a positive future," Jean—Yves Dormagen told The Guardian.

However, according to the survey, confidence in the EU as an institution remained high. 74 percent of those surveyed wanted their country to remain in the union. Poland and France were the most negative of the nine countries, but even there, 68 and 61 percent respectively were in favor of remaining.

Also related to the issue, 63 percent of respondents believed that the UK's decision to leave the EU had had a negative impact on the country. However, 19 percent believed it had been positive, including five percent who considered Brexit to be very positive.

Trump Opens Tip Line—About "Fake News"

Donald Trump's war against what he calls "fake news" continues. Now, a tip line has been opened directly to the White House, where anyone can report news media in the hope that they will end up on the government's list of shame.

The Trump administration recently created a "media bias portal," where media companies that the White House considers biased against Trump are listed. The New York Times, Boston Globe, and CBS News have already made it onto the list.

"Unfortunately, journalistic standards have fallen to historically low levels, and we struggle with this every day," said Trump's press secretary Karoline Leavitt when the list was presented.

Now comes the next step in Donald Trump's crusade against "fake news": a tip line to the White House. Through a portal on the president's office website, anyone is encouraged to submit their contributions to "expose the worst of the worst."

"So–called 'journalists' have made it impossible to identify every false or misleading news report, which is why help from Americans is necessary. The days when fake news media controlled the narrative with lies, false anonymous sources, and arbitrary angles are over," the White House writes in its presentation of the tip line.

"If you know of any media outlet that misrepresents the Trump administration and slants the truth, link the article below so our team can review it!" it says above the tip form.

I USA riskerar transpersoner att stämplas som terrorister

[machine translation]

In the US, Transgender People Risk Being Labeled as Terrorists

Life for transgender people in the US is becoming increasingly difficult. They now risk being labeled as terrorists for "gender extremism," and many are fleeing the country or their state. At the same time, Sweden has a habit of turning American hatred into Swedish talking points. We must now ensure that the same thing does not happen here, writes Signe Krantz.

An acquaintance wrote to me recently. We are not particularly close, but she needed help for her friend and pulled every string she could. She asked if I knew the best way to obtain asylum in Sweden.

So she wouldn't have to return to the US.

She is a transgender person living here, but under Trump's administration she doesn't dare to travel back. After his war on everything called diversity and woke, half of all LGBTQ characters seem to be disappearing from American television.

Republicans in Congress are entering new budget negotiations on public healthcare with the aim of removing the right to gender–affirming care, which would likely deprive tens of thousands of transgender people of their hormone treatments. The government has tried to withdraw funding from schools and universities that teach about transgender people.

Now they want to ban changes to legal gender in passports, invalidate all previous changes to legal gender, and make it impossible to go under the radar as a transgender person.

These are just a few recent examples of hundreds of others. This persistent and targeted persecution is impossible to describe without sounding like a madman.

I understand why my acquaintance's friend does not want to move back. Many transgender people have fled the country or states with anti–trans laws. If I could, if Sweden still had an asylum policy, I would bring every single one of them here.

They also risk being labeled as terrorists in Trump's new McCarthyism.

In the government's new guidelines against domestic terrorism, NSPM–7, they list opinions associated with political violence. They claim to be fighting terrorist acts by anti-fascists, the new monster under the bed for a country hurtling toward the abyss of fascism.

The directive lists opinions that may be indicative of politically motivated violence. Such as "anti–capitalist," "anti–Christian," and "gender extremist."

The third concerns transgender people.

We do not yet know what this will lead to in practice. But it obviously does not take much to be labeled an extremist by a government that is already deploying the military against its own citizens.

I don't really want to treat Sweden as a state of the United States. We have our own problems and shouldn't have to respond to every major news event from there. But unfortunately, American hatred tends to become Swedish talking points.

No Swede was concerned about drag queens until the Sweden Democrats saw that it was a good election strategy in the US and wanted to try it here.

There, they talked at length about "gender ideology" or "trans ideology." A way of portraying transgender people as the embodiment of a dangerous ideology, rather than people with certain shared experiences. When people are portrayed as terrorists or a political group, it suddenly becomes okay to fight them with political means.

The terms have also been used by despots such as Jair Bolsonaro and Putin and have now begun to establish themselves in Sweden. Rarely with an explanation or any examples.

Dehumanization begins in language.

Like many scapegoats, transgender people are portrayed as both too weak and too strong. Weak as easily offended and mentally ill wimps. Strong as dangerous extremists or cunning lobbyists who have wrapped healthcare, culture, and politics around their little finger.

Archetypes, threats, stereotypes. Not as whole people who live lives as rich as yours. Otherwise, the authoritarian logic would not have worked.

It is vulgar to call it a culture war. A war implies that there are two sides with equal motives and rules. But in this case, it's a targeted election strategy to divide and rule and distract from other issues.

Last year, Republicans spent more money on anti–trans advertising than on any other topic, while Kamala Harris talked about the economy and democracy. The strategy didn't win many votes, but it engaged their own supporters and made Democrats see transgender people as a burden.

Normally, I would try to offer some hope. There is always resistance, and nothing bad lasts forever. But the situation in the US will get worse before it gets better.

The least we can do is make sure that the same thing never happens here.
